Short Stories From Hogwarts of Heroism, Hardship and Dangerous Hobbies (Short Story Review)

  1. Title: Short Stories From Hogwarts of Heroism, Hardship and Dangerous Hobbies
  2. Author: J.K. Rowling
  3. Genre: Fantasy
  4. Summary: ‘Minerva was the Roman goddess of warriors and wisdom. William McGonagall is celebrated as the worst poet in British history. There was something irresistible to me about his name, and the idea that such a brilliant woman might be a distant relative of the buffoonish McGonagall.’ – J.K. Rowling

Pottermore Presents is a collection of J.K. Rowling’s writing from the Pottermore archives: short reads originally featured on pottermore.com with some exclusive new additions. These eBooks, with writing curated by Pottermore, will take you beyond the Harry Potter stories as J.K. Rowling reveals her inspiration, intricate details of characters’ lives and surprises from the wizarding world.

These stories of heroism, hardship and dangerous hobbies profile two of the Harry Potter stories’ most courageous and iconic characters: Minerva McGonagall and Remus Lupin. J.K. Rowling also gives us a peek behind the closed curtains of Sybill Trelawney’s life, and you’ll encounter the reckless, magical-beast-loving Silvanus Kettleburn along the way.

General Review

  1. Description and Imagery: J.K. Rowling does a great job of placing the reader into the world she creates. Each story talks about a different character and their lives, giving an in-depth look at those who didn’t get much shine in the famed Harry Potter franchise.
  2. Relatability of MC: These short stories talk about different people and their lives. Each person is relatable in their own way. There is one moment from every story that brings readers into the world of the characters and shows them what their core philosophies are.
  3. Pacing: This concept doesn’t really apply as these short stories are biographical and present an in-depth look into character’s lives.
  4. Perspective: A first person perspective would have made readers experience the lives of the characters with the character. The third person perspective gives an account that kind of takes readers out of the story, albeit slightly.
  5. Vibe Check: I’m not the biggest fan of Harry Potter but I liked it enough to watch the series with my girlfriend. All in all, an interesting series that shows different aspects of the wizarding world.

Personal Review

The story about Miverna McGonagall is an interesting one as in the Harry Potter series she always seemed like this ever-present guardian for Harry and the others. She’s always been there in key moments throughout the series and has played instrumental parts in the second wizard war that many people don’t realize.

The rarity of her ability to turn into an animal at will is also exemplified in her life story and the breakdown of the whole process is painstaking and requires a tremendous amount of patience.

At first, I figured it would be short stories from key events in the character’s lives that personify who they are as individuals. However, when I read the story and discovered it was really an account of their lives, it was kind of a disappointment.

However, the stories of each character are riveting in their own right and I’m sure many readers will come to enjoy them as many readers already have.
