Having a sense of community is important, comforting and brings peace to those who need it. Clubs have the ability to impact our view of community in a positive manner.
Being able to gather in a physical space, versus a virtual environment, brings a sense of closeness and support. It provides the participants a place to cope.
Journaling is a coping mechanism that is often suggested directly by those who work in the mental health field. Junk journaling is a branch of that — it’s a more creative and artistic way of journaling. It involves documenting your life through photos, and items that others would consider “junk”, such as: Receipts, tickets, wrappers, napkins with logos on them, and so much more.
Junk journaling can also be utilized as a creative outlet. It does not have to document your everyday life, it can be a simple collage made out of magazine cutouts, or random cutouts you already have at home.
Junk journaling in itself is a booming online community, but in times of hardship, people crave and seek physical communities, where they can gather and interact in a common space.
The GR Junk Journaling Club does just that — we strive to be an inclusive, safe space and community amidst the current negative political climate. We aim to provide a space where our members can feel comfortable to express themselves, create memories and distract themselves from the world, even if it’s just momentarily.
Our monthly meetings and in-between workshops fulfill the need for human connection, a sense of belonging, certainty, comfort and significance. Nobody is seen as insignificant or less than! We are all equal, despite skill level, race, sexuality, etc.
Our club is a place for the artsy folk in Grand Rapids, MI who feel like outcasts, people of color (like myself) who feel scared by our current world events and people in the LGBT+ community, who feel like they don’t have a voice.
Overall, GR Junk Journaling Club was created to provide safety, comfort and to be able to indulge in a shared hobby.
If you’re from the Grand Rapids/West MI area, please feel free to join our club! We have an Instagram (@grjournalclub) that will provide you with all of the information you need.
