Written Author Interview

Tell me about yourself. What do you like to do outside of writing. What is a day in the life like for you?

Outside of writing I love to go walking, do ballet, and a plethora of other things. As far as my day goes, I usually get up early, do chores, then work, then do poetry, go walking, then spend time with my family.

What inspired your first novel? What was the thing that got you into writing in the first place?

My novel came to me in a dream over three nights. I felt like I had to write this story and bring it into the world. I wrote my first poem at 4, my grandmother wrote poetry and stories based on the bible she kept. So, it’s just something I inherited.

How do you come up with characters? Are they spontaneous or meticulously planned?

Spontaneous, for me too much thinking kills the authenticity of a character. I prefer to create characters from the thoughts I have in a moment.

What are some of your favorite genres to read? Are there any books you’d recommend to first time readers or people looking for something new?

I don’t have favourite genres. If a story is good then I will read it. I’d recommend The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett. It’s an easy book to escape into whether you are a new or seasoned reader.

What’s the most difficult thing about being a writer?

It’s hard to point out one thing specifically since there are many difficulties that come with this path. But what I’ve found to be the hardest thing is the isolation you have to endure to create a novel, to produce stories, having to close out the world in such a way can be painful but necessary.

What is your process to completing a novel from outline to final product?

For me, it’s getting the idea either from a situation or dream. Writing the first draft, getting distracted by writing poetry, do three more drafts before editing it, adding and cutting things. Then after many sleepless night – boom the book is done.

What’s the most unhinged thing you’ve written in your novel? Don’t worry, we don’t judge here.

Aside from the murderous stalkers? Hm, probably just the fact that Amber, although it was never directly stated, it was implied that she has had sex with Chen for favours in the past. I’d say that’s the most unhinged thing.

What’s one thing about being a writer that absolutely drives you up the wall?

Dealing with literary agents who think authors are people they can discard at the drop of a hat. I miss the days when authors could deal with the big 5, minus the middle man.

What does being a successful writer look like for you? What type of life do you want to live as a writer?

To me it’s writing my stories, making a positive difference, then going back to my log cabin, raising my family as I continue to write more stories. To me that is my ideal life as a writer.

Describe your writing journey. If you had to write a story centered around it, do you think you could pull it off?

I could and it would probably be my autobiography since writing has been a weaving thread throughout my life. Basically, I wrote my first poem at 4, then three novels at 10 but lost them which discouraged me for a while. As a teenager I’d write poetry whenever I was upset or bored to process my emotions. Then as an adult, 19 to be exact, I decided to dedicate my life to it. After trying other professions, I found myself always coming back to the same thing – writing / poetry. It is something in my spirit that I can never get out.
