Catching up with author Jordan Fitch
- What are some of the obstacles that come with being a writer? Particularly, when it comes to writing a series.
- I haven’t written a series (yet). For me, one of the main obstacles is creating the time and space to work. It’s not something I can progress on with a spare 20-30 minutes, so I need to be deliberate about scheduling time.
- What is the best method for writers to gain inspiration, in your opinion?
- For my work, during the inception phase, I start with what I want to say, and what I think the reader may walk away with. If I can get a focused message to be the backbone of the story, it guides each step. Sponteneous moments of insight are rare, but when they do occur, it’s usually while I’m running or hiking.
- What were some of your biggest accomplishments in the year 2024 as it relates to writing?
- I published my debut novel, The Cardinal Line, at the end of 2023, so I’ll take the liberty to call 2024 as my entry into the world of being an author. I attended many author events, expanded my social media reach, and wrote my second book in 2024.
- What’s a scene that you’ve written that will always live rent free in your head? How did you feel when writing that scene then and how do you feel about it now?
- There are many, but The Cardinal Line has a scene in a high rise apartment that I loved building up to and writing, and many readers have remarked that they loved it as well. Name Town has a scene near the end that I envisioned before I started writing it, too, and it’s also received strong praise from my readers.
- What are some of your goals for 2025 as a writer?
- I plan to make progress on my next work, which will be a series. I also want to expand my social media reach on more platforms.
- If you had the chance to rewrite any story in your image, which one would it be and why?
- I don’t know if I can answer that. Every story and every author is unique, and I won’t presume that I could do justice to another writer’s work.
- Where’s the weirdest or strangest place you’ve gotten an idea for a story?
- I get my moments of inspiration while running, hiking, biking, etc.
- What’s one lesson you want people to take away from your story?
- For Name Town, my hope is that people who see themselves as belonging to a certain group might step back, question why, and find empathy in those from supposedly opposing groups.
- What do you believe the goal of fiction writing is?
- To learn. I want to learn something when I read, and if what I learn is about myself, the book has done its job.
- What advice would you give to writers that struggle with putting their work out there for the world to see?
- Don’t waste energy with concerns about how others will react, or judge, or critique. Write something true to yourself, and let that be enough.
