Talking more with author Astrid Rose

  1. What inspired you to write this book?

From a young age Ive always had such a vivid imagination, always making up

stories, that continued on into my adult life. Then one day during lock down I

sat and started to write this out, when that all ended I forgot about this story,

until one day I let a friend of mine read it, she was so excited and told me I

would be silly not to keep writing it. so I put pen to paper and haven't looked

back since.

2. How did you choose the title? Does it hold special meaning to you?

The title was so hard to come up with, I had a lot of other ideas, The Book

Reader was on my list of finals, after a while and looking at it so much, it just felt

so right.

3. Can you share your process of writing and how long it took to complete the

book?

I dont plan my stories out, I know the path I want it to take, I sit down and

just start typing, after a few lines, I get flashes in my head, my characters

start speaking to me and tell me the story they wish to tell. most of the time I

think it is going to go one way until one of them is like, actually we want this!

it makes for a very entertaining party in my head.

4. Were there any challenges you faced while writing or publishing it?

I’m dyslexic, so for me the grammar and some spelling is difficult. I started my

journey knowing that I will come across these things, and people who do not

understand how a mind like mine works. The hardest part is to ignore what those

say, to keep powering through no matter what.

I am not stupid. I just think differently.

So I made sure to have a team of people to help me, a very good friend of mine E.K

hunter who is also an author is peer editing for me, checking for any mistakes that

are missed, any sentences that could be backwards. (This can also happen with my

dyslexia) Another author friend of mine Autumn Lawrance Barnette is also dyslexic

has been behind me all the way, giving me advice, making me not only believe in

myself, but has been an absolute rock to me, the tears i’ve shed because of self

doubt and fear during this has been very difficult.

5. How do you feel about sharing your work with the world?

I’m excited to share my story, also very nervous. after my beta’s have read it and the

reaction I got, which was in the form of multiple voice knows telling me they need

book two now and they will stop speaking to me if I don't give it to them, I am

counting down the days for everyone else to read it!

6. Are there any parts or characters in the book that are especially personal or

meaningful to you?

Arianna is my main female character. She has my heart. without giving too much of

her story away, she has so much to go through. It's all of this that makes her strong.

I was cheering her on through my whole book.

7. What do you hope readers will take away from this book?

My story is about overcoming the darkest of odds and still coming out the other

end okay. I want my readers to know that no matter what they have to face in life,

how difficult the path may be. that there is a way out.

During my writing journey I've met many people with dyslexia like me, it makes me

so sad that they are still made to feel stupid, to feel less about themselves. Children

and adults with dyslexia are not stupid, we just think differently. and that's okay.

8. Did you experience any memorable moments during the research or creation of the

book?

For me, it was the laughter and the tears I cried while writing it, I found myself fully

immersed in the story. Each word I was writing I felt it in my heart. I did have to

google some very dark and strange things, my evil characters are pure bad and

some of the things they do make me question my mind sometimes… My husband

just laughs at me when he sees what I’ve added to my chapters.

9. What surprised you the most about the publishing journey?

The support for indie authors from readers, I have met some many wonderful

people and each one of them so willing to shout out and support. that makes my

little writers heart beat with joy!

10. Do you already have ideas or plans for your next project?

I seem to have unlocked my imagination even more since finishing The Book

Reader.

I’m writing book two right now. Ive also just finished a mental health charity

anthology called Just Breath, my story for that one is about someone with dyslexia,

I also have about five works in progress, so I have a lot planned for the future,

which I am so excited about.
