Talking more with author Tasha Horbett

  1. What inspired you to write this book?

Before recovery, I held many misconceptions about addiction—and was certain I wasn’t an addict. Coming to terms with the truth changed everything. I wrote this book to reach others like me, to show them they are not alone and that there is hope on the other side.

2. How did you choose the title? Does it hold special meaning to you?

I chose the title because before recovery, I felt broken, unworthy, and as if my life lacked any real purpose. Recovery taught me otherwise. The title reflects that transformation from despair to empowerment.

3. Can you share your process of writing and how long it took to complete the book?

My process began with crumpled papers and scattered journal entries. What started as therapeutic journaling slowly evolved into telling my life story. The project unfolded over the course of nearly two years.

4. Were there any challenges you faced while writing or publishing it?

The biggest challenge has been marketing the book while working within a tight budget. I’m not doing this for financial gain—I just want to share my story with those who may need it.

5. How do you feel about sharing your work with the world?

At first, it was terrifying. I was afraid of being judged harshly. But if my story can help even one person feel seen or inspired to seek help, then it will have been completely worth it.

6. Are there any parts or characters in the book that are especially personal or meaningful to you?

Since this is a memoir, the entire book is deeply personal. But the section on the ACEs (Adverse Childhood Experiences) quiz stands out as especially meaningful. It was a turning point in understanding the roots of my struggles.

7. What do you hope readers will take away from this book?

I want readers to know they are not alone. Addiction is not a choice, but recovery is—and it’s possible.

8. Did you experience any memorable moments during the research or creation of the book?

One surprising aspect of the writing process was how much I began to remember as I wrote. The more I reflected, the more memories surfaced—many of which I hadn’t realized I still carried.

9. What surprised you the most about the publishing journey?

I was surprised by how accessible the publishing process was. It felt more achievable than I expected, especially as a first-time author.

10. Do you already have ideas or plans for your next project?

Yes—Book Two is currently in progress. It will feature a collection of poems, short stories, and in-depth shadow work rooted in healing and personal growth.
