Written Author Interview

  1. What is your favorite genre to read for fun?

My favorite genre to read for fun is RomCom. I often read at night before bed, so like to be able to read something easy to digest, makes me laugh, and sets me up for a good night’s sleep.

2. Is there an author who might have inspired you to write for the genre you currently write in?

I am so inspired by Catherine Newman. I love how she balances humor with poignancy in all her books. And she writes about relatable topics in a very conversational way.

3. Which comes first in your writing process: Draft OR Cover?

For me, I write a vomit draft and then revise a million times.

4. What things tend to interfere with getting work done for you? (Examples include: Other people? Time? Money?)

The biggest issue I have is time. I work part-time and have 2 kids. But the other issue is I have never been good at working late in the evening or early in the morning, so those hours are out. I need a chunk of time during the day.

5. When is the most productive time of day for you to write? Early riser? Afternoon Delight? Or Night owl?

I am most productive between 11-2 pm

6. How many query/submission letters have you written and sent off?

I have written and sent off over 200 queries/submissions between my debut, my starter book that will never see the light of day, and another book I am still trying to find a home for.

7. What is typically playing over your stereo when you drive or have headphones on? Silence? Music? Podcast? Audiobook?

I don’t listen to anything when I write— only the voices in my head. I listen to music when I drive. Recently, i have started listening to the occasional writing related podcast.

8. How do you handle criticism or negative reviews?

I think overall, I handle criticism well and negative reviews mostly well. There is a moment where I dwell on it, but within an hour, I have let it go. I can’t please everyone and not everyone will like what I write. I don’t love books that other people rave about, so I get it. It’s so subjective is something I have learned over and over since I started writing and querying.

9. How do you find you best handle road rage? Are you more of the passive aggressive driver? Or the match your Energy type? Or are you the driver ignoring them cutting you off as you sing loudly to yourself?

I drive a lot for work and have to say that I see many appalling things. I drive quite defensively to avoid accidents. But I do become angry over certain things like people going 20-30 mph below the speed limit when there is no passing lane.
