Written Artist Interview
Tell me about yourself. What do you like to do outside of art? What is a day in your life like?
I’m an artist who specializes in semi-realistic and realistic character art, book covers, and map illustrations for authors. Outside of art, I enjoy exploring new art techniques, studying fantasy landscapes, and finding inspiration in books and nature. My day usually involves sketching concepts, refining details, and collaborating with authors to bring their stories to life.
What inspired your first artwork? What got you into art in the first place?
I’ve been passionate about art since I was a kid, but my first big inspiration came from fantasy novels and game art. Seeing detailed character designs and intricate maps made me want to create my own. My first commission was a character illustration for an indie author, and that moment showed me how art can shape someone’s creative vision.
How do you come up with your characters or designs? Are they spontaneous or meticulously planned?
It’s a mix of both! For characters and book covers, I start with the author’s description and mood references, sketching rough ideas. For maps, I carefully plan the layout to match the worldbuilding. I like letting creativity flow but always refine my work to match the author’s vision.
What are some of your favorite artistic genres or styles? Are there any artists who have influenced you?
I love fantasy, historical, and dark academia aesthetics. Artists like Loish, WLOP, and concept artists from games and movies have influenced my work. Their ability to tell stories through visuals inspires me to create detailed, emotionally rich artwork.
What’s the most difficult thing about being an artist?
Balancing artistic freedom with client expectations. Sometimes, I get really excited about adding intricate details, but I also make sure the final piece aligns with what the client envisions. Finding that balance can be tricky but rewarding.
What is your process for completing artwork, from concept to final product?
I start by gathering references and discussing the client’s vision. For characters and book covers, I sketch different poses and compositions. For maps, I draft the terrain, cities, and landmarks. After feedback, I refine the details, add textures, and polish the final piece.
What’s the most unique or wildest artwork you’ve created?
I once designed a fantasy map with floating islands, glowing rivers, and hidden kingdoms. It was super detailed, with tiny illustrations of creatures and ancient ruins. It pushed my creativity, but the author loved it, so it was worth it!
What’s one thing about being an artist that absolutely drives you up the wall?
When I spend hours perfecting a tiny detail, and no one notices — but I notice! It’s part of being an artist, though, and those small touches can make a piece feel alive.
What does being a successful artist look like for you? What type of life do you want to live as an artist?
Success means being able to create art full-time, collaborating with authors and creators worldwide. I’d love to illustrate entire book series, create iconic character designs, and see my maps printed in fantasy novels.
Describe your art journey. If you had to illustrate it, what would it look like?
It would look like a map of an evolving world — each land representing a different stage of growth, from sketchy beginner areas to detailed, thriving kingdoms. The path would twist through mountains of practice and forests of self-doubt, but always lead toward endless creative possibilities.
