Written Interview

What inspired this book?

The inspiration for my poetry collection came while I was under talent management. A man named Cliff Adams suggested that I publish a poetry book with his recommended company, Cover Girl World Management, specifically using Book Baby as the publisher. He had worked with them before and helped me brainstorm the book’s name and concepts. I have been writing poetry since I was a little girl in church and have performed many times in my community while growing up.

What is your process for developing a poetry book? From ideation and writing to editing and publishing? Walk me through it.

  1. Write Your Poems: Embrace the creative process by letting your imagination flow freely. Dive into the world of words and allow your feelings, observations, and inspirations to transform into verses. The key to developing a compelling poetry collection is to create a wide array of poems, each one reflecting your unique voice.
  2. Select Your Poems: After writing numerous pieces, take the time to sift through them and identify the gems. Consider which poems resonate with you the most and which convey your intended themes. Look for emotional depth, originality, and a strong connection with the reader.
  3. Organize the Poems: Once you’ve chosen your strongest works, think about how they will interact with one another. Arrange them in a way that creates a natural flow, guiding the reader through your thoughts and emotions. Consider factors such as mood, imagery, and narrative progression to enhance their impact.
  4. Get Some Opinions: Share your selected poems with trusted friends, family, or fellow poets. Gather feedback to gain fresh perspectives on your work. This step can provide valuable insights that help refine your collection and ensure it resonates with a wider audience.
  5. Edit the Poems: With the feedback in hand, embark on the editing journey. Revise each poem meticulously, paying attention to word choice, rhythm, and clarity. Don’t hesitate to reshape lines or eliminate unnecessary words—each poem should be polished to perfection.
  6. Design the Poetry Collection: Consider how you want your collection to be presented. Think about the layout, cover design, and typography—these elements should reflect the essence of your poetry and draw readers in. A captivating design can elevate the reading experience.
  7. Upload and Order Proof Copies: Once you’re satisfied with the design and format, upload your collection to a publishing platform. Order proof copies to see your work come to life in print. This is an exciting moment, as it allows you to hold your creation in your hands!
  8. Final Review: Take one last look at your proof copies. Read through the entire collection with fresh eyes, checking for any lingering typos or formatting issues. Ensure that everything aligns with your vision before officially releasing your poetry collection to the world.

What is the most difficult thing for you about being a writer?

The most challenging aspect of being a poet and writer is submitting my work for features and writing opportunities. Thankfully, through Seven Story Publishing, I can navigate this process more easily!
