Talking more with author Jalen Tellis
- What inspired you to write this book? I always wanted to write a Sci-Fi story that
involved aliens. Incursion was a idea that stuck with me for years, since I was 14.
The inspiration really came from within, because if I’m being honest, no media or
any other story inspired me to write Incursion, this story strictly came from inside
my mind.
2. How did you choose the title? Does it hold special meaning to you? The title
“Incursion” heavily holds special meaning to me. By how the story is, the title
made sense. At first, and this was years ago, I originally wanted to call this story
“Unwanted” or “Not Alone” but I knew looking back at it, those titles weren’t good
enough. Incursion really stuck and it made the concept interesting. I don’t know if
every author is like this, but the title of your book is one of the most important key
things for a literary novel.
3. Can you share your process of writing and how long it took to complete the
book? I started writing Incursion in February of 2024, and I set myself a deadline
of June 1st. When I write, I do 4 sessions, each session I write for 25 minutes
and after I take a 5 minute break. I wrote for about an hour or two, and with
Incursion, I finished the first draft in April.
4. Were there any challenges you faced while writing or publishing it? The challenges
I’ve faced while writing was definitely the ending. I had an original ending for the book
and during writing, I realized that the story was going into a boring narrative. I’m not
going to say what was the new ending that’s in the book because of spoilers, but it was
something I felt made sense with the current trending topic in certain movies and books.
5. How do you feel about sharing your work with the world? I feel amazing. It’s a
blessing being able to share something that I’ve wrote to everyone to read and enjoy.
Even if the certain person won’t enjoy my work, it still brings a piece of happiness
knowing everyone is giving me a chance.
6. Are there any parts or characters in the book that are especially personal or
meaningful to you? On Chapter 8, there’s a certain part in that chapter where the mc
Riley Marson talks about his purpose on why the choice he’s going to make is
necessary. Once again, I don’t want to spoil but I left a piece of myself in that part
because of how much I feel like that God sent me here for a real purpose. A purpose
that could inspire others or change something. Being that influence who can make an
impact.
7. What do you hope readers will take away from this book? This question is a good
one, but tricky. Because, my intentions when I publish my books, I want my readers to
feel something. When they turn to that last page and close the book, whatever their first
initial thought or feeling is how much of a impact the story had on them. Weather that’s
good, bad, it doesn’t matter. Everyone has their own perception of how they feel about
certain stories, and I can’t just go with the mindset that I hope readers will adore my
books because if some don’t, my plans will be crushed. I think I should leave an open
mind when people read my works. Yes, I do hope people enjoy them, and I know how
much time and effort went into this book, and my confidence in people loving it is high.
8. Did you experience any memorable moments during the research or creation of the
book? When researching Incursion, I learned a lot about the concept of Ufology. One of
the characters in the book is Timothy Hall, who is a Ufologist. I really had to dive into the
core of Ufology to make it as accurate as possible, which was the best part because not
many people know about Ufology.
9. What surprised you the most about the publishing journey? The core key
fundamentals of marketing as a Self-published author. Have to be creative and have fun
with it. Enjoy the process and make the best of everything.
10. Do you already have ideas or plans for your next project? Yes! I am developing my
3rd novel, which is settling to be my most challenging and most complex yet. It’s going
to be fun, and I can’t wait to start writing and show everyone once everything is completed
