Written Interview

Tell me about yourself. What do you like to do outside of writing? What is a day in your life like for you?

I love spending time with my family and friends. My husband and I have two cats and a dog that we rescued, so you’ll often find me taking our dog for a walk or sitting with a cat on my lap. I’m also a screenwriter with a big love of films. I go to the movies at least once a week (I enjoy watching movies at home too, but at least in the theater I’m a lot less likely to fall asleep!). I’ve also recently taken to playing the ukulele. My husband got me started on it, so now we play together almost every day. Then there’s also my day job as a video producer that keeps me pretty busy! Evenings and weekends are when I usually get time to write.

What inspired your first novel? What was the thing that got you into writing in the first place?

I feel like I’ve been a writer ever since I could remember! I started writing my first book when I was 13. It wasn’t very good and I never finished it, but I just loved being able to jump into another world at any moment, to tell a story that would intrigue and inspire people. That’s something I still love about writing to this day. The first novel I ever finished writing was my debut thriller Wrong Girl Gone. I started writing that in high school, and continued writing, editing, and querying it to publishers for over ten years before I finally received a publishing offer – a dream come true for almost any author!

How do you come up with characters? Are they spontaneous or meticulously planned?

That completely depends on the story. Sometimes, I get an idea for a character, and then that character drives the story. Other times, I get an idea for a story, and end up figuring out who the character is along the way. One thing I always try to keep in mind when creating believable characters is that they need to be human. And to be human, they need to make mistakes. I try to put my characters in situations with difficult choices, because I believe that the choices we make are what shape us.

What are some of your favorite genres to read? Are there any books you’d recommend to first time readers or people looking for something new

My favorite genres to read are psychological thrillers, domestic thrillers, horror/suspense, and romance. In terms of romance, I always always always recommend Rainbow Rowell – she’s been a huge inspiration to me ever since I first read her book Eleanor & Park. For thrillers, I always enjoy B.A. Paris and Riley Sager.

What’s the most difficult thing about being a writer?

I’m sure almost every writer says this, but the most difficult thing is writing! You feel like you never have the time you want to be able to write, especially between editing, marketing, promoting, etc. Personally, on any given day, I’ll have one new novel I’m working on, one I’m doing content edits for, one I’m doing copy edits for, and one I’m promoting. It can be a lot to juggle, but you have to make the time to sit down and write.

What is your process for completing a novel from outline to final product?

I’m definitely a big outliner. I typically start with an idea, then build it all out into an outline. From there, I break down that outline into chapters and what I want to have happen in each chapter, then I write, write, and write some more. Finally, when I have a finished draft, I edit, starting with content edits and the big stuff, then copy edits, until it’s ready to either be queried or sent to the publisher. I also like to have at least 2-3 people read it around the copy edit stage to get some good feedback.

What’s the most unhinged thing you’ve written in your novel? Don’t worry, we don’t judge here.

I can safely say that there are several scenes in my upcoming novel The Ever End that I would definitely consider unhinged! I’d rather not say what they are so I don’t give away any spoilers, but let’s just say fans of MidsommarGet Out, and Hereditary will find it to be right up their alley.

What’s one thing about being a writer that absolutely drives you up the wall?

People who find out that I write and immediately respond with, “Oh, I’ve got a great idea for you!” I wish there were enough hours in the day to write all of the stories I have ideas for. I have no shortage of ideas!

What does being a successful writer look like for you? What type of life do you want to live as a writer?

I would love to be able to write full-time. Being able to wake up every morning knowing that my only job that day is to write would be the dream!

Describe your writing journey. If you had to write a story centered around it, do you think you could pull it off?

My writing journey has had a lot of ups and downs and a lot of lessons learned along the way. I could definitely see it being tied together in a story. I’d love to share what being a writer really means – the long nights, the tediousness, the rejection, and all of the good things in between.
