I looked at her. My love. My wife. The woman that brought me up from nothing. The woman who had always been with me. Then I looked at the world. Billions and billions of selfish, greedy people. People who only want to see others suffer. People in high places taking advantage of the innocent. The innocent. What about the innocent? Did they deserve to burn?
“Bryn!” I turned back to look at her. Tears filled her eyes, threatening to spill over. “Casey.” I walked to her. “Please don’t cry.”
“Bryn, listen to me. Please. Please don’t sacrifice the city for me.”
“But it’s you, Casey. YOU.”
She nodded. The tears were finally running free “It doesn’t matter—You’ll find other people to love.”
“As much as I love you? Never.” She was the one reason I hadn’t gone mad already. I wouldn’t find anyone like this anywhere else.
“But Bryn. You have to think. I’m just one person. Please. Please don’t let it burn.”
“I’d let—”
“I know darling. You’d let the world burn for me. But I don’t want you to. Please. Please.”
“Why?” Why would she want to die? I held her face gently. She leaned into my touch.
“Ashley. Mom. Dad. Please Bryn. Please.” Of course. she had always been selfless. Even now she was. Tied up to the pole. Looking at the city which he threatened to burn.
“But—”
“She’s only five Bryn. Think of the other little kids and babies. Bryn.” I turned to him. He was still in the shadows. Lurking. He knew I had lost. He knew I would only listen to her, because I always have and always will.
I kissed her one last time. Tasting the sweetness of her lips. Then I turned to the figure again.
“Take her. Leave the world.”
He sneered. “Typical hero.” He untied her before taking her away. I stayed on the rooftop, staring at the city. This better have been worth it.
