Hey guys, in this post I’m going to go some of the things I do personally that make my writing more appealing to readers and some things you guys can do to make your writing interesting not only to your readers, but to yourself as well. As a writer, you need to be invested into your story for it to truly blossom; otherwise, it will fall flat and you won’t have the courage of convictions when it comes to promoting and marketing.
There are many things that go into the fundamentals of writing that stimulate the reader’s imagination and pull them into the story such as Description, Imagery, Storytelling, and World-building. For the sake of this post, I’m going to keep it short and sweet, and, if anyone wants me to elaborate, I’ll be glad to do so.
- Description– the way you lay things out on the page for the reader, the details of the scene and what’s happening around the main character. The look in the character’s eyes as the girl they love ends with someone else; how the wind that blows through the character’s hair as they go skydiving for the first time, the exhilaration and terror of descending to the ground.
- Imagery– capturing the scene around the character, the torn down building, the graffiti on the walls, the crumbled up bottles of water on the ground, the grey and cloudy skies that signal rain, the people in wheelchairs with tattered clothes and dirty bare feet, etc.
- Storytelling- How the chapter of a novel flows together with the rest of the story, how the characters react to their circumstances and turn the odds into their favor. This is where who the main players are is determined, whose actions or lack thereof effects the story the most.
- World-building- The way everything around the main characters works to show the reader the nature of the environment. How things outside of the main character influence their decisions and actions. Weather affluent, impoverished, interstellar or otherwise. The environment will ultimately determine what the characters can and cannot do which also determines the severity of their predicaments when things go wrong.
Hopefully this post helps you understand at least a bit about what goes into the craft of writing. In reality, writing is really simple and all one would have to do is read bestselling authors and pick up what makes good writing and what doesn’t.
However, being aware of what actually goes into the craft and being able to apply it at will is one of the things that makes a good writer and great writer and what makes bad writing not so bad.
See you later!
